Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Combines Classic Literature with Brain-Eating

We don't usually read Jane Austen. Up until now there just hasn't been a reason to.

But with his new masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Seth Grahame-Smith has finally made it worthwhile. Take it from us, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet are wayyyy more interesting when being chased by the undead and overcoming a zombie plague. This is classic British literature you can really sink your teeth into.

The 9 Geekiest Album Titles Ever

>> Monday, January 26, 2009

Sometimes an album title is enough to warrant buying it. Even if the music sucks -- these albums have such rad names, you won't be ashamed to show your friends...

Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot (Sparklehorse)
Kinda rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?

Little Magnets Versus The Bubble Of Babble (Transvision Vamp)
There's nothing that says "rock n' roll" like little magnets.

Title of Record (Filter)
Not really creative... but clever.

Fungus Amongus (Incubus)
It's an album, and a great source of penicillin.

Geek in the Pink (Jason Mraz)
We don't get the "pink" part, but Jason Mraz is a pretty geeky dude, so we'll let it slide.

Worst Band Name Ever (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left Right, B, A, Start)
We beg to differ. That is, by far, the BEST band name ever.

piouhgd (Butthole Surfers)
Whaaaaa? Seriously guys, way to make your marketing campaign extra-difficult.

Hissing Prigs in Static Couture (Braniac)
None of those words have been, or ever will be, in the same sentence again.

Suck Fony (Wheatus)
We get it, dudes. And it's pretty funny.

Facebook Brutally Murders Whopper Sacrifice App

>> Sunday, January 25, 2009

Via TechCrunch, we learned that Facebook has shut down the "Whopper Sacrifice" app we told you about in a previous post.

Apparently, too many friends were being deleted in exchange from free burgers, and Facebook didn't like it.

We see their point. What does it say about us as a society, if we freely trade genuine friendship for a measly lard-and-corn-syrup burgers with fake grill marks?

Earmarks + Spreadsheets = A Fun Look At Government Spending

Ever want to analyze government spending in the comfort of your own dimly lit, basement nerd-cave?

Well, thanks to Taxpayers for Common Sense, now you can -- CLICK IT!

Being geeks means we watch public broadcasting. And our favorite show, Bill Moyers Journal, recently did a story on pork barrel spending in Congress. Thanks to the web and some hard working policy geeks, we can crunch the numbers for ourselves...

Didja know Washington spent $1.5 Million on "Neuregulin Research"?

Or that a cool $9 Million was dropped on something called "Eielson Utilidors"?

We have no idea what any of that means. But it sure is fascinating (and frustrating) to see all the ways your hard-earned cash is being tossed down the toilet.

9 Funniest Classic Songs Butchered by Microsoft SongSmith

>> Friday, January 23, 2009

Microsoft SongSmith allows you to sing into your computer and it will add its own music allowing you to create songs just by singing. Thanks to this, many (especially azz100c on YouTube) are taking classic songs, extracting the vocals, putting it through SongSmith, and dubbing the new song over the original music video. Here are some of the best videos we've seen that prove computers know nothing about what sounds good.

The 6 Stupidest iPhone Apps Ever Created

There's plenty of people out there talking about what are the best iPhone apps or showcasing a list of free iPhone apps, but we wanted to take a moment to highlight a different aspect of the iphone app world. Specifically, here's a list of the 6 Stupidest iPhone Apps Ever Created.

6. Bishop's Score Calculator: Tells you if you're in labor or not.
Really? You're nine months pregnant, your water has broken, and your belly feels like Bruce Lee is kicking it repeatedly. Do you really need to consult your iPhone? You're. Giving. Birth.

5. Electric Smoke: Go on, PRETEND to smoke!

For those of you who love to mime smoking, but aren't creative enough to put a straw in your mouth and puff.

4. My CoinFlip: Heads or tails?
You realize paying a dollar for a fictional quarter is really dumb, right? For the same price, you could get like three real quarters. (We're not good with math.)

3. Lucky Lotto!: Generates random numbers to play in the lottery.
If you need to consult your cell phone to generate random numbers, you might actually be too stupid to play the lotto. Here -- 46 95 73 11 10 39 -- you owe us a buck.

2. Expresso for Starbucks: Dream up your own Starbucks coffee and... well, nothing. Just keep dreaming about it!
Hold up. This app costs $4.99? And for that, you get to fantasize about what kind of coffee you're going to buy for another $5? Download this app, and Starbucks actually is ripping you off twice.

1. Guard Dog: Protect your home with the faint, tinny sound of a prerecorded dog bark.
Picture it -- a burglar is at your back door. Thinking fast, you run TOWARD the burglar and activate your Guard Dog iPhone app. Will the burglar (A) believe that the quiet, robotic dog quack is an actual doberman, and run away? Or (B) break down the door, stab you in the eye and steal your iPhone?

Steve Jobs' Mystery Illness?

While the official story is "hormone imbalance," there are many theories about the true nature of Apple guru Steve Jobs' illness. We've rounded up the most likely culprits...

1. Stendhal Syndrome - An array of symptoms, caused by looking at (no joke) looking at great works of art. Clearly, the new LED Cinema Display counts.

2. Alien Hand Syndrome - Sufferers' hands take on a mind of their own. Steve could be constantly fondling people, unaware. Perhaps caused by too much iPhone texting??

3. Cotard Delusion - A mental ailment during which you think you're already dead. If you see an Apple CEO walking around in a coffin, that's a good indicator.

4. Corpolalia - a.k.a. Tourette Syndrome. No real evidence here. Just think it would be funny to see Steve Jobs blurt out "Mother-cock taint fart grabber!" during Macworld Expo.

New amusing-yet-not-particularly-useful Facebook app "Facebook Grader" ranks you on how much of a tool you are. Or rather, how many of Facebook's tools you use.

Plasma Power - Not a good thing

>> Monday, January 12, 2009

Own a plasma TV? Like conserving energy? Get ready to feel guilty...

I was just reading this article about the EU banning plasma televisions because they use more than TWICE the power of similar-sized LCDs.

Turns out, plasmas suck energy faster than a vampire at a hemophiliac convention. And many models draw power even when they aren't on.

Worried, I looked up my specific model on CNET's HDTV power consumption chart. Not good news. My Panasonic 42" costs me up to $144 a year to power! (If I'd gotten an LCD, it would be more like $60-70.)

Who knew watching TV could cost so much? Next time I wanna see The Daily Show, maybe I'll watch online...

Obviously, Rob and I disagree. Attack of the Show is still hugely popular, bash.org is fresh, and clever blogs like thenerdist.com are popping up all over. Geeks are just entering the mainstream!

Of course, maybe I'm just in a tizzy over nothing. Maybe these comments were just from some loony youtube freaks who flame any video they come across.

Would you sacrifice a friend for a free lunch?

I signed up for the app, then scrolled through to see who I would delete. It was more difficult than I thought. Even though I knew I could just re-add them as friends later, something about the whole thing made me feel icky. These are my friends!

In the end, I didn't have to make Sofie's choice. The app wasn't working on my browser, so I uninstalled.
