9 Wisest Philosoraptor Quotes
>> Wednesday, April 8, 2009
The Philosoraptor is very enlightened, raising questions that are tough to answer or will at least make you ponder for a second. Here are other imaginary animals we like.
9. Broken Clock
Classical words of wisdom.
8. Seeing Colors Differently
Who hasn't wondered this once or twice?
7. The Game
The rules of the Game being "if you think about the Game, you lose".
6. Rule 34
If it exists, there must be porn of it.
5. Portal
Yes, the cake is a lie.
4. Humans? Dancers?
Why can't it be both, Philosoraptor?
3. Two Watches
Very insightful. Unless both watches tell the correct time, of course.
2. Mordor
We actually saw a documentary on this matter and yes, one can.
1. Free Will
This is a tough one. Any help?

Free will does exist. But the atoms and particles that make up the mind also react in probabilistic ways. Since these are both indisputable, we can extrapolate that free will must come from some place other than the mind.
I agree. It comes from the liver.
Free will exists until a decision has been made. Upon reflection of the decision, you realize it couldn't have happened any other way.
Humans cannot be dancers, because only twileks know how to dance properly.
The universe (and our mind) is also made of quantum particles, which do not behave in a probabilistic way.
Personally, I don't think our minds are complex enough to understand ourselves completely.
you cant win the game. (maybe with that whole XKCD thing, though...)
if you try to lose the game, you lose the game.
however you DO win the "try to lose the game" game, which is not the same as the game.
Magic.
Well one thing you got to realize also about free will and the mind is that we aren't using 100% of our mind. Now with that we are trying to understand our minds fully when we only use so little of our mind. Sorry it is worded really weird hopefully someone understands me and words it better. :)
Side note: the "not using 100% of our mind" thing is bullshit.
the words are: are we human or are we denser? come on total fail
the mind is not physical, it is a state of being, it is not made up of particles, free will is a conscious choice made by ones self. or are you trying to tell me my conscious is made up of atoms and particles.
Lmao @ porn

Yes, but you're too stupid to listen. Maybe you're not using 100% of your mind after all, eh?
Who says free will exists? It may simply be an illusory belief that we use in order to be able to coherently punish acts that we deem blameworthy or establish social ties. In other words, what if determinism is true?
free will is an illusion. while we do, at any given time, have a choice that resembles free will, we ultimately act in predictable patterns. we are slaves to our subconscious-self, and that is not free will.
"Free will does exist. But the atoms and particles that make up the mind also react in probabilistic ways. Since these are both indisputable, we can extrapolate that free will must come from some place other than the mind."
Wow. Logic fucking FAIL.
To expand on that thought:
We are nothing but inconceivably complex organic machines. There is no such thing as true "free will." An omnipotent being would be able to predict our actions with 100% accuracy.
However, since omnipotence is impossible, free will exists for all extents and purposes.
My favorite is the one that says "Why do I shot web?"
free will is an illusion. at the time of choice making it may look like you have multiple choices, but in the end there will only be 1 choice you can choose. but, if it was proven that free will was only an illusion, then no criminal would be guilty of anything but following the timeline of the universe, in wich case its not their fault they killed anyone. so free will makes it easier to say "well this guy had a choice in what he did". but history has gone its course and done its own thing.
"Freewill" is just a term coined to give our actions some sort of meaning and control. "I did this because I wanted to do it."
But if most, if not all motivations exist outside of one's self then how is it possible to claim responsibility for our actions?
There is no free will, only chaos in motion. Infinite randomness and probability define our lives, not this illusion of choice.
Fuck yeah for philosophy. The pictures were hilarious.
OK - a guy jumps out of a plane, as he nears the ground he has two choices right?
Freewill dictates that he can chose to live or die. Gravity is forcing him to make the decision, however it's neither taking away nor giving him life, it's simply forcing him to make the decision and HE ALONE has the freewill to choose either life or death.
Be a shame if he chose life and the shoot failed....
"I Agree, It comes from the Liver"
man i lost it for like 10 mins
im so baked, stumbled on this mess,
cool pics but you guys are nuts!
I think there's some confusion here regarding the mind and the brain. What some people here are referring to the mind they are actually talking about the brain. Maybe the confusion lies in the notion that the mind is intangible while the brain is material. Obviously the brain is an organ that fires and receives electric signals that dictate action, senses, emotion, respiration, etc. I think the mind is your true consciousness filtered through the brain.
Free will doesn't exist. I had to prove that for my philosophy final. Read up on epiphenomenalism.
You "bloggers" are so annoying. Do you think anyone ever cares what your opinion is? Just look a the picture, laugh about it, and move on.
It's a photoshop, you can blatantly see the pixels
I happen to care very deeply about all of your opinions, you are humans and I love you all. Even the guy who things "bloggers" are annoying ;D
free will:
something that can act in a way with no extranal influence
i.e a radioactive atom
two exact radioactive atoms will decay independent of everything.
so the last one is wrong
see
Free will dose exist...and it doesn't come from the mind .....It comes from GOD!!!!
one cannot simply walk into mordor! the very idea is preposterous!
thanks drew, you took the words right out of my mouth
My name is Will and I'm in prison, and god damn it, I ain't free...
it depends in what aspect you look at as the mind. What Philosoraptor is referring to is something material, like the brain. while my perception of the mind is energy impulses BETWEEN atoms and particles. as energy is not matter, in my perspective, neither is the mind.
