Conan O'Brien's Week In Geek: Shatner, Anime and Harry Potter

>> Friday, July 31, 2009

Network television has been getting progressively nerdier, with shows like Chuck and The Big Bang Theory, but the new Crown Jewel of Geek TV is The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. With Jay Leno gone, the iconic late night show has become a geek's paradise. They've gotten rowdy at a middle school science fair and debated the merits of Twitter with the hilarious Twitter Tracker sketches.

This week, they really upped the dork humor, with videos featuring a Harry Potter friend getting in trouble, Star Trek legend William Shatner riffing on politics, and Conan himself dubbing a popular TV anime. Join us for Conan's incredible Week In Geek:

3. Dumbledore Does Hollywood

Can a Tony Stark party video be far behind?

2. Shatner Reads Sarah Palin's Speech

A fitting tribute from the man who made the song "Rocket Man"... something else entirely.

1. Conan and Andy Dub "Ghost In The Shell"

They may not understand anime, but that doesn't mean they won't voice it!

Bonus: Jimmy Fallon's Disastrous Comic-Con

Not to be left out of the geek parade, fellow NBC late night host Jimmy Fallon went to Comic-Con 2009 in order to pitch his superhero idea. It went REALLY well.

Meme All-Stars: All Your Base

Not all your memes belong on the Geek Pad's Meme All-Stars list, but this one certainly does. Last week we inducted the tights-and-lights wearing Tron Guy. This week, it's All Your Base, which began life in 1989 as a poor English version of a weirdly translated video game from Japan (called Zero Wing). In 2000, when video of the opening cut-scene made it to SomethingAwful and Newgrounds, the internet exploded and a techno flash cartoon sensation was born. Ladies and gentlemen, All Your Base:

12. All Your Base Are Belong To Us

11. Fox Newscaster Tries In Vain To Explain "All Your Base"

10. All Your Snakes Are Belong To Us

9. "Aww" Your Base

What If Ghostbusters Was Made In 1954?

>> Thursday, July 30, 2009

Are the ghosts in your house a drag? Well, here's a flick that'll make you flip! It's "Ghost Busters." Who are the keen scientists giving ghouls a knuckle sandwich? It's Dean Martin as Ray Stantz, Bob Hope as Peter Venkman, and Fred MacMurray as Egon Spengler. They're hip to haunts, man!

Okay, enough with the 50's lingo. Here's an amazing remix of old movies to create a trailer for what Ghostbusters would have been like as a 1950s film. I ain't afraid of no mashups, nor should you.

TinyURL Has VERY Important Uses

It's getting harder and harder to trick people on the internet. Luckily, new technology makes anything possible! Consider the Rickroll, a delightful prank with a dozen variations. Unfortunately, people have caught on that suspicious YouTube links probably mean they'll be hearing Rick Astley sing about his unwillingness to give you up.

Did that spell death for the meme? No! With TinyURL, we can keep Rickrolling alive forever, or at least until people get suspicious of TinyURL. So, are there any other potential uses for the service? Uhm... yeah, I can't think of any either.

Sure, Lolcats are cute now, their popularity soaring, riding around on their invisabl bikes, but that doesn't mean it'll stay that way forever. This video shows us what the future holds for Lolcats 50 years from now, and let me tell you, it ain't pretty.

The sketch was created by SMBC Theater, helmed by Zach Weiner of the webcomic Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, which is full of WIN. Can the new sketch troupe translate Zach's sensibility into the kooky world of viral video? Maybe it posible.

Kill Dracula By Shoving A Crucifix Up His Butt

Click on comic for full-sized version.

Dracula is perhaps the scariest monster of them all! The most efficient way to kill him is to stab him in the heart with a wooden stake. That's also NOT the most fun way to kill someone. In this comic book version of Bram Stoker's Dracula, written by comics reviewer Abhay Khosla, a man trying to kill Dracula gets a series of unhelpful suggestions from his two teen helpers. Spoiler: Many of their suggestions involve taking a dump on him.

Will the teens agree to the man's wooden stake plan? Or will the man agree to allow for a compromise of one dump on Dracula's chest? Find out by reading the full comic here, and I'll keep my eye out for future installments.

8 Internet Memes Turned Into Art Masterpieces

Techno Viking. Oil on canvas.

Memes are more than just Rick Astley prancing around and creepy bears harassing your children. They've become art. Witness these provocative paintings created to capture the wonder, the innocence and the power of these internet phenomenon. Step into our meme gallery and enjoy these works of art:

8. Dramatic Chipmunk

The terror, the drama in the eyes is captured in this stunning oil painting.

7. Star Wars Kid

There's clearly a joy in capturing the frenetic movements of the Star Wars Kid, but also a quiet stillness that permeates the entire painting. Perplexing.

6. O RLY

Can the famous questioning owl truly be captured in ink? Yes, really.

5. LOLcat

A city wall was transformed into a canvas for this cat's portrait. The invisible bicycle is intriguing.

4. Cosby

The contrast between comedian Bill Cosby and the Pokemons makes for an engaging portrait.

3. Tron Guy

He's a big man, and yet the line-work of this drawing suggests a frailty behind the frame.

2. NEDM

This Happy Cat was illustrated in a delightful homage to Warhol. To compliment the image, any galleries hosting the painting should play Doom Music.

1. Diet Coke and Mentos

An explosion of taste, and yet, a minimum amount of color. Oil on canvas.

Game Genie Granting Real Wishes

Get Your Brick On: 7 Lego Rap Music Videos

You can build with them. You can eat them. And now you can get funky with them. Lego figures may look kinda honky, but they know how to get down with the beat (many Legos are from the East Side). So pass the chronic, grab the mic with your yellow claw, and get ready to lay down some tracks. These are Lego rap music videos:

7. Circle Circle Dot Dot - Jamie Kennedy

Gotta love Slave Leia, shakin' dat ass for a Lego spanking.

6. Lego Star Wars Rap

What is thy bidding, my master? To create a Lego video for this sci-fi rap.

5. Nuthin' But A G-Thang - Snoop Dogg

Not just a music video. This is a Lego version of the Up and Smoke Tour live show. If you got messed up enough at the show, I bet Snoop would look like a giant Lego.

4. Ninja Rap - Barats and Bereta

Ninjas, birthdays, rapping - put it all together and wrap it in a Lego package.

3. Crank That - Soulja Boy

Lego Soulja Boy? You'd better crank that!

2. White and Nerdy - Weird Al

This Lego video is an homage to a parody song. I think my head'll explode just thinking about it.

1. Da Mystery of Chessboxin' - Wu-Tang Clan

Creating a badass Lego Wu-Tang Clan video is like... a well-played game of Chess.

Support Our Stormtroopers

It's tough to be a stormtrooper. You're just doing your job, protecting the charismatic Lord Vader, when all of a sudden you're lightsabered down by a couple of rebels who snuck into the Death Star. What about showing some love to our men in white plastic, who've sacrificed so much for you?

Now you can buy the graphic above as a car magnet and let the whole galaxy know that you support our stormtroopers. They're out there in clunky costumes, trying in vain to defend the Empire. Buying this magnet will help keep the force strong with them. Also, someone should write a power country ballad, as well.

Paul Scheer's Velvet LOST Painting

A beautiful piece of art, isn't it? Comedian Paul Scheer worked for months to create a black velvet LOST portrait featuring creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse posing with a polar bear. This epic tribute to LOST should be hanging at a museum, but instead Scheer generously gave the painting to Damon and Carlton at San Diego Comic-Con's LOST panel. Video of the encounter is below.

Every panel I went to featured cringe-inducing questions, so it was nice to see a Q&A where something truly funny and awesome happened. For more info, Paul has been keeping a lovely blog about the creation and distribution of his masterpiece over at the appropriately named DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear.com

10 Questions For Megan Fox From Horny Comic-Con Fanboys

At this year's crazy Comic-Con, Megan Fox did a panel to promote her new film, Jonah Hex. She was also there to make Transformers fanboys drool all over themselves. It's not abnormal for question-askers at Comic-Con to kiss celebrity ass, but with Megan Fox they took it to a whole new level. Here are a few of the questions they asked (slightly paraphrased):

10. "My question is for Megan: why are you so hot? And my second question is: seriously, why are you so hot?"

9. "Megan, are you as hot in Jonah Hex as you are in Transformers? Because - I'm not sure you're aware of this - but you're very, very hot in Transformers."

8. "This question is for Josh Brolin. Was Megan Fox's ridiculously hot body a constant distraction on set?"

7. "Is it true that if I masturbate to you enough times, you'll visit my bedroom at night?"

6. (Takes out video camera) "Just say anything. I'm recording your mouth close-up."

5. "This question is for the entire cast: Megan Fox, Megan Fox, Megan Fox, Megan Fox, Megan Fox. Thank you."

4. "Hi Megan... I think yer purty. Hee-yuck, hee-yuck, hee-yuck."

3. "Megan, do you want to see my tattoo of you? It's you riding my penis like a mechanical bull." (She shakes her head 'no.') "Are you sure?"

2. (Questioner dry humps the microphone stand while staring at Megan, "finishes," then quietly walks away.)

1. "Megan, I just want you to know that I'm saving my virginity for you. Some might say I'm a virgin because I'm fat, mean and smell bad, but now you finally know the truth."

FOUND: The Worst Video Game Ever Made!

The Angry Video Game Nerd is adept at finding and reviewing terrible old school video games, but he's finally outdone himself in the latest episode of the web series. In an epic, no-holds-barred, 20 minute review he savages a 3DO game called "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties," which is a vacation slide show disguised as an "interactive romantic comedy." However, it's neither a video game nor an actual movie. It's just bulls***!

Also, fans of AVGN at Comic-Con would do well to drop by the Spike TV booth, where James Rolfe himself will be hosting Spike's coverage of the event. So if you don't believe that "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties" is the worst video game ever, you can ask him yourself.

4 Japanese Fangirls Who Met American Celebrities

While the term "fanboy" brings up images of a fat, pimple-faced guy in a Star Wars t-shirt playing with vintage Transformers action figures, the Japanese girl equivalent is considered... well, adorable? It's a far cry from the stereotypical weirdos populating San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. So here are a few lucky Japanese fangirls meeting their favorite celebrities:

4. Avril Lavigne

Avril can have the "sexy camera"... but not the tie. The tie is hers!

3. Britney Spears
